Gas friendly campsites a stone’s throw from London

If you live in London, sleeping out under the stars can seem like an impossible dream. It may surprise you to learn that a number of campsites lie within easy reach of the capital. This summer, why not swap the fast pace of the city for a night out (or more) with nature. Many of the places listed below would also make great budget accommodation for visitors or alternative sleeping arrangements for a big event.

Lee Campsite, Sewardstone

This facility-packed site is only about an hour away from the city centre and caters for tents and caravans. Once you've rolled in or pitched, activities include white-water rafting, golf and cycling. Fuel-wise, you are free to bring your own Calor gas bottles and small charcoal barbecues are also permitted.

Walton on Thames Camping and Caravanning Club

While only open to members of the Camping and Caravanning Club, this site is somehow actually inside London. Clean and well maintained, you will need to provide your own toilet facilities. Nordic Walking, Llama Trekking and Horse Riding are provided nearby. You are welcome to bring a self- contained barbecue, either with charcoal or bbq gas. Other club sites – Horsely and Chertsey – lie around an hour's drive away.

Crystal Palace Club

Another members only site for the Caravan and Motorhome Club, this site sits comfortably inside the city boundaries. Catering for tents as well as the club's namesakes, the club has a host of facilities on its doorstep. These include the Crystal Palace Museum and Park, swimming and easy connections to attractions in London itself. Barbecues with charcoal are welcome, or bring your own Calor gas.

Laleham Camping Club

Slightly further afield on the outskirts of Staines, Laleham is a family orientated traditional camping ground. It's within easy reach of attractions like Thorpe Park and Legoland, and puts on inclusive Children's Weekends. While they are happy to serve tents, caravans, and motorhomes of all kinds, if you don't have your own accommodation, they have well-equipped tents for rent.

Camping is available at many more places not far from London. All of these locations have their own rules and regulations which are important to note before making arrangements.
