Going camping? How to use gas bottles on the campsite

With most of us not being able to take an international holiday this year, many are turning to staycations as a way to get out of the house. According to statistics, camping had a huge boost during 2020 as a result of the pandemic, and this boost is not expected to slow in 2021.

If you are thinking about going camping this summer but have never been before, here’s everything you need to know about using gas bottles on a campsite so that you can have a safe and enjoyable time.

Essential kit for camping

Camping gas (such as Calor gas bottles) is the most effective way to cook on a campsite and is by far the safest option. Depending on how long you're staying, you can choose to pack a lightweight gas canister or a larger gas bottle if you are going for a longer period of time.

Choose the right equipment

Before you set up your gas bottles and cooker, you need to make sure you have the right equipment. First, you must decide whether or not you want to use a propane or butane gas cylinder. Butane is a more efficient and inexpensive option of gas that works well if you are camping in warmer months. However, if you are thinking about a winter camping trip, propane works much better in colder temperatures.

You also need to make sure that you have a gas regulator that works with your gas bottle. The regulator ensures that the gas is at the right pressure when it leaves the bottle so that your stove can heat up safely.

Gas bottle safety essentials

If you are using gas when you are cooking, you must ensure that you understand how to safely look after and cook with it, so that you and your loved ones are safe at all times. You must never cook inside a tent, as this can lead to a build-up of carbon monoxide which could be deadly. If you are changing cylinders, always make sure that you do it in the open air, and regularly inspect the bottle and hose for leaks.
